The Brick Pathway

Red brick pathway from the synagogue to the house at 2760 Grant Avenue, May 2021.

A red brick pathway lies between the synagogue and the house at 2760 Grant Avenue, although not completely connecting to the house. This pathway was created as part of Congregation Brith Sholem member Joshua Whitney’s Boy Scout Eagle project of Troop 1 of Ogden. The main purpose for this project was to renovate the front of the synagogue, including pulling weeds, creating a patio area, and placing the brick pathway. This project was facilitated with the help of a few members of Troop 1, young members of the congregation like Cole Stern, and Joshua’s parents, Devon and Gillian Whitney.

The pathway is made up of red brick pavers. As the manager of the project, Joshua needed to figure out how to properly lay the brick pavers using a running bond pattern. The answer was Legos which Joshua used to successfully plan out the design of 6X6 bricks and 6X9 bricks. About 300 bricks were used to create the path, which took a lot of effort to purchase and haul to the congregation. Scattered throughout the pathway are 70 engraves bricks purchased from members who donated funds for this project.

On August 27, 2010, congregation members gathered around the front of the synagogue after Shabbat services to witness the unveiling of Joshua’s project. Cole and Joshua started the unveiling with the Shehecheyanu prayer used for special occasions. [1]
