100 Years of Congregation Brith Sholem: Honoring the Jewish Community in Ogden, Utah: Isidor, Anna, Sidney, and Fannie Gordon
Isidor, Anna, Sidney, and Fannie Gordon
Anna and Isidor Gordon were both early members of Congregation Brith Sholem, moving to Ogden in 1919 before the erection of the synagogue. Anna Baron was born in 1895 and came to the United States and settled in New York at a young age with her parents. There she met Isidor, who immigrated to New York from Russia in 1900 at the age of seventeen. They married in 1909 and lived in Brooklyn, New York, until 1919, when they decided to move to Ogden with their daughter, Fannie, born April 10, 1910, and their son, Sidney, born July 18, 1915.[1] According to Sidney, his parents left Brooklyn because a doctor in New York told his father that they should move West due to his poor health. Anna and Isidor decided to move to Ogden because Isidor’s brother lived in the area.[2]
That same year, Isidor and Anna opened the New York Clothing Store, specializing in re-selling high quality clothing for men and women. Their first store was located at 259 Twenty-Fifth Street until 1932, when they moved a few stores down to 252 Twenty-Fifth Street. The business was active until Isidor’s death on October 28, 1958.
Isidor and his son, Sidney, opened another retail business while also operating the New York Clothing Store, The Hub Clothing store at 320 Twenty-Fifth Street. Anna Gordon co-owned and worked for both businesses. Before Sidney went into the family business, he enlisted in the army in 1942 and served twenty-seven months in England and France until returning home in 1946.[3]
The entire Gordon family were members of Congregation Brith Sholem, including Isidor’s brother, Samuel Gordon, and his family. Isidor was the congregation’s treasurer and secretary for thirty-five years, and Sidney, known as Sid to congregation members, led Erev Shabbat services for twenty-three years. [4] Isidor, Anna, and their daughter, Fannie, were also members of the B’nai Brith Chapter of Ogden. Anna Gordon passed away on December 12, 1968, Fannie Gordon on May 23, 1992, and Sidney Gordon on July 18, 2002. Fannie and Gordon had no descendants.
