100 Years of Congregation Brith Sholem: Honoring the Jewish Community in Ogden, Utah: “May the doors of this Synagogue be wide enough for all to enter”
“May the doors of this Synagogue be wide enough for all to enter”
Congregation Brith Sholem, located at 2750 Grant Avenue in Ogden, Utah, is the oldest Jewish synagogue in Utah that continues to hold religious services. Currently the synagogue includes members from over thirty-five households from various cities and towns spread across northeastern Utah to southern Idaho.
Without a rabbi since the mid-1930s due to a sharp decrease in members and financial struggles that came with the Great Depression, the synagogue currently depends on their members to conduct most Shabbat services, with a monthly visit from a student rabbi from the Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles.[1]
Congregation Brith Sholem also offers weekly worship services and various religious courses, including religious school which helps prepare children for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Tot Shabbat which incorporates both children and parents to interact and learn about Judaism, and adult education.
