Hyman Sharfman came to Ogden, Utah, to serve at Congregation Brith Sholem around May of 1931. Before arriving to Ogden, Rabbi Sharfman was the leader of the Hebrew Educational Alliance in Brooklyn. Rabbi Sharfman stayed a short time in Ogden, leaving in July 1931 as he took posts in other Western cities, such as Reno, Nevada, and Phoenix, Arizona.
Rabbi Sharfman was born in Russia in May 1888. He came to the United States and settled with his parents in New York at a young age. He first went into the merchant business, owning a big department store in Brooklyn. He went into a professional career and received a degree in optics after graduating from Southwestern Optical College in Kansas City, Missouri in 1917. Hyman wanted to devote more time to study the Torah, which led him to become ordained as a rabbi. Hyman Sharfman died in his home in Los Angeles on January 21, 1959.[1]
