Women participated in athletics since the early history of the university, organizing a baseball team in 1898 and hosting local basketball games in the 1910s. Women could also take classes aimed at physical exercise and health.

However, prior to the 1970s, women had few opportunities for organized athletics. It was not until the passage of Title IX that more resources and support became available to them.
