After Title IX
Hiring Marilyn Weiss and McReavy Peppler
The enactment of Title IX was slow to take effect across the country. In 1975, USU hired Marilyn Weiss as their Director of Women’s Athletics. She faced the challenge of building multiple varsity teams from the ground up, including volleyball, basketball and gymnastics teams.
USU Volleyball coaches Marilyn McReavy Nolen and Mary Jo Peppler
For her first year, Marilyn Weiss coached three teams herself. Over the next few years, she was a tireless advocate for women’s sports, making key hires for her teams and getting resources and financial support. For the 1978 volleyball team, the hiring of Marilyn McReavy and Mary Jo Peppler was the first step to establishing a top-rate volleyball team.
