Creation of the water lab and the concurrent establishment of the Center for Water Resources Research spurred greater interest in interdisciplinary studies. As the water lab continued its focus on hydraulics and other engineering aspects, the center became a means of inviting broad collaboration with other researchers and scientists having more diverse interests. Most notably, these early collaborative efforts included researchers in the Colleges of Science and Natural Resources affiliated through the Ecology Center, and social scientists affiliated through the Institute for Social Science Research on Natural Resources.
