USU and the Island Market

At just over a mile between the Island Market and the university campus, the Island Market and Utah State University have had a close relationship over the years.

Because many of the Island Market’s customers were university students, advertisements for the market often appeared in USU student newspapers. The market even appeared in featured stories and shout-outs. The Island Market is part of the fabric of Logan city and has been part of the experiences of USU students for decades.

One owner of the Island Market, Floyd Saltern, was quoted in an article in USU’s student paper in the late 60s. He and other local grocers were interviewed concerning the trend of underage students trying to buy alcoholic drinks using fake IDs. (The pages are available to read below.)

These pages below show the context of other events surrounding USU students at the time.

Although the Island Market has appeared in the student paper through ads, it has also popped up through events and student shout-outs. Below are several examples of connections that USU and the Island Market have had through Statesman articles:

One event that the Island Market has been involved in was "Nourishing Nordics," an event put together to help raise interest in healthier, more sustainable, and local eating options in Cache Valley. It was organized and researched by USU student Shandrea Hickock, who researched Scandinavia's sustainable habits. This event also showed Utah’s connection to Scandinavian ancestry. The Island Market was listed as a participant under the “Sustainable Living” category.[94]

Even today, the Island Market is listed on a USU web page aimed at helping new students find nutritious food options[95] and a USU digital exhibit supporting alternative markets in the Logan area.[96]

Students regularly become employees of the Island Market, and for those university employees passing by on the way to work, the Island Market is a regular stop. The regular path-crossing of USU and the Island Market is guaranteed to continue.
