Ground was broken for the Merrill-Cazier Library on May 1, 2003, to replace the Merrill Library as a major addition to the university’s other library building, the Cazier Science and Technology Library, also known as the “Sci-Tech” Library, which opened in 1995.  The new Merrill-Cazier Library would expand the Sci-Tech Library by nearly two-thirds to accommodate the collections, staff, and services previously housed in the Merrill Library. The new 305,000-square-foot facility would merge two libraries into one, both physically and in name.[1]

The groundbreaking ceremony featured speakers including Vice Provost Linda L. Wolcott, Provost Stan L. Albrecht, Utah’s First Lady Jackie Leavitt, Representative Loraine Pace, ASUSU President Celestial Bybee, and USU President Kermit L. Hall. A public reception was held immediately following the program in the Atrium of the Cazier Science and Technology Library.[2]
