Dolph Andrus had the spirit of an adventurer, a sense of curiosity, and a solid work ethic. Although his expeditions might seem reckless, he made preparations and mapped out the path before he began the journey. He was fascinated by Monument Valley from the first moment he set eyes on it during the drive down to Bluff, Utah.
“While our driver tinkered with his car, we got out and stretched our legs and I stretched my eyes and imagination on the distant view. I was bitten by a bug that afternoon. I never did get over its effect on me. Even today I get ‘that old feelin’ whenever I see a picture of Monument Valley. I made a vow right there that someday I would ride among them. This I never put out of my mind.” —See Andrus’s Life Story, p. 2.
