Feminism in Hollywood

Back in 2007, Natalia Thompson wrote an article titled "The Chick Flick Paradox: Derogatory? Feminist? Or both?" In her article, Thompson argues that “given the pop culture phenomenon the chick flicks genre has become, it’s not surprising to find that they tend to disappoint when approached from a feminist perspective."

Until a couple years ago, women in Hollywood have suffered sexist work environments, lack of job opportunity and wage inequality. But recently, “Hollywood has made a turning point” (Setoodeh). It’s rare nowadays to not see successful women in Hollywood, whether they be an actress or director.

Mark Waters' and Feminism.

There were quite a few different scenes in Mean Girls, that almost didn't make it into the movie because of MPAA guidelines. An example of this would be a girl who announces that "It's not my fault I have a wideset vagina" when trying to defend herself after being called a slut for using tampons. Waters, the film director, had a few debates with MPAA on whether or not he should keep the “menstrual and sexual realities” (McCord, 67) of the girls. During the commentary of the film, Waters' defends himself and the use of the sexual realities using his "feminist authority” (McCord, 67).
