ENGL 6750, Summer 2017: Jackson Hole Dude Ranching Tradition: Triangle X Ranch: Introduction
Adapted from Training the Next Generation of Fieldworkers by Randy Williams, Utah State University
During August of 2017, eight Utah State University and three University of Wyoming students learned the art of cultural documentation at the historic Triangle X Dude Ranch inside the Grand Teton National Park. As proprietors of the oldest operating dude ranch in the GTNP, the Turner Family has welcomed guests at the Triangle X for more than ninety years. This summer, the Turners’ welcomed the USU/UW students as they participated in a Library of Congress Field School for Cultural Documentation.
The products from the field school (interview audio, vetted transcripts, and photographs) and supplementary photographs of Triangle X buildings and events, and the field school class, are available in the robust digital collection Jackson Hole Dude Ranching Tradition: Triangle X prepared by USU Special Collections & Archives and Metadata Spervices.
The 2017 Field School is a collaboration between Utah State University, the University of Wyoming, and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
In this exhibit, you will learn about the tradition of dude ranching in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the history and current operations of the Triangle X Ranch, and themes that emerged from the field school's documentation, including relationships with the National Park Service, horse culture at the Triangle X, and Turner hospitality. You will also meet members of the Turner family, Triangle X employees, and ranch guests.
Exhibit curated by Kylie Schroeder, Fife Folklore Archives 2017 Graduate Intern and field school participant.
