Side by Side Comparison of ERA Stances
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued this pamphlet as an insert in the March 1980 issue of their monthly magazine, the Ensign. The purpose of the pamphlet was to clarify and expound the reasoning behind the Church’s stance on the Equal Rights Amendment. Church leaders were opposed to the amendment for a variety of reasons, the foremost of which was because they felt it would be a threat to women and the family.
The Mormons for ERA issued this pamphlet in 1979. It responded to frequently asked questions about the Equal Rights Amendment and states the organization’s reasons for supporting it. They argued that the Equal Rights Amendment would promote the rights of women in the United States and promote values and principles that were essential to their religious faith as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They argued that by supporting the ERA they were living their religion and being loyal to deeply held religious convictions. They believed that opposition to the ERA was a betrayal of these convictions.
This gallery is a side by side comparison of responses to frequently asked questions about the Equal Rights Amendment by both The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Mormons for ERA. Our analysis of each organization’s pamphlets shows that both groups were concerned about and sought protected rights for women, but they disagreed about how the implementation of the ERA would impact women and the family.
