Mama 2013: Mental Health in the Real World
This film expresses real problems in today’s world. According to NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illnesses, one in five people suffer from some kind of mental illness. In the film, several characters struggle with some kind of mental issues.
The message this film reports is extremely important because it’s everywhere in society. 530,000 Americans attempt suicide annually. Out of the 530,000 people, 30,000 Americans successfully commit suicide because of mental illnesses. ("Suicide" Mental Health America). Mental illnesses are downplayed in society, but end up taking so many lives. Mental illnesses should not be taken lightly, it is a very serious matter.
The reason critics and audiences looked past this very important message is because of how entertaining the film is. Lots of things are going on in the film, Mama is bent and misshapen, jump scenes pop out, Uncle Luke is hospitalized, the aunt wants to take custody, and many messages are portrayed. However, the most serious message this film presents is the awareness of mental health.
