Title A name given to the resource Dolph Andrus's Monumental Highway Expeditions Description An account of the resource Monument Valley, with skyward reaching red rock monuments, has long been symbolic of the rugged deserts of the American West. However, before Western films, television shows, and commercials established its fame, Monument Valley was virtually inaccessible for locals and tourists. Even after the invention of the automobile, the absence of an effective road system in the harsh terrain did little to heighten its accessibility. Dolph Andrus, of Bluff, Utah, set out to change that and was convinced that he could open Monument Valley to automobile tourism. In the Spring of 1917, Andrus left Bluff, Utah with William H. Hopkins, a dentist and enthusiastic photographer, to complete an automobile journey through Monument Valley, on to Kayenta, Tuba City, and Lee’s Ferry, Arizona. Later that summer, Andrus set off again with photographer, L. W. Clement with the intent to photograph the natural bridges and monuments of the valley. Andrus’s wife, Irene, and daughter, Torma, accompanied them on this trip in which burros were used for transportation. The bulk of this collection consists of the photographs taken during these tours of Monument Valley, Natural Bridges National Monuments, Zion National Park, the Colorado River, and the San Juan River. Andrus’s Maxwell automobile is featured in many of the images. Also in the collection is the personal history of Dolph and Irene Andrus and log of these trips. Two of the bills prohibited all forms of advertisement for intoxicating beverages from being delivered by the United States Post Office. In addition to the text of the bills, the bulletin contains excerpts of several organizations' reactions to the proposed legislation. Most dissenters argued it set a precedent for the limitation of freedom of the press. This bulletin provides a sample of the types of arguments and language used by the anti-prohibitionists leading up to the passage of the Volstead Act in 1919. Gus Becker was an active member in the United States Brewers' Association, serving as a board member for many years. He eventually became the organization's president from 1939 to 1947. Title A name given to the resource Jack London at Utah State University Description An account of the resource Jack London, legendary author of adventure classics such as Call of the Wild and White Fang, came from blue-collar beginnings and was largely self-taught. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, “mammy” Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky. Merrill-Cazier Library's Special Collections and Archives houses one of the largest Jack London manuscript collections in the world, second only to the prestigious Huntington Library in San Marino, California. This acquisition was a result of the close personal and professional relationship between Irving Shepard, Jack London's nephew and executor of his literary estate, and King Hendricks, a prominent London scholar and English professor at USU. Thanks to a series of purchases and donations from the London estate made between 1964 and 1971, USU is now proud to provide online access to selected material from the collection. However, before Western films, television shows, and commercials established its fame, Monument Valley was virtually inaccessible for locals and tourists. Even after the invention of the automobile, the absence of an effective road system in the harsh terrain did little to heighten its accessibility. Dolph Andrus, of Bluff, Utah, set out to change that and was convinced that he could open Monument Valley to automobile tourism. In the Spring of 1917, Andrus left Bluff, Utah with William H. Hopkins, a dentist and enthusiastic photographer, to complete an automobile journey through Monument Valley, on to Kayenta, Tuba City, and Lee’s Ferry, Arizona. Later that summer, Andrus set off again with photographer, L. W. Clement with the intent to photograph the natural bridges and monuments of the valley. Andrus’s wife, Irene, and daughter, Torma, accompanied them on this trip in which burros were used for transportation. The bulk of this collection consists of the photographs taken during these tours of Monument Valley, Natural Bridges National Monuments, Zion National Park, the Colorado River, and the San Juan River. It was produced by the National Association of Mutual Casualty Companies (NAMCC) for the American Legion. These men helped Franklin Roosevelt save democracy. We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. J.R. Farrar is shown in several scenes. I would really appreciate help with identifying the other men and women featured in this film. I am especially interested in the civilian bilateral arm amputee who introduced the film and narrated it. The construction of Bushnell General Hospital was begun a couple months after Pearl Harbor. It was substantially complete by the end of 1942 and accepted its first Army casualties in the Fall of that year. The hospital operated until 1947. This film was preserved as a 16mm print for 50 years by J.R. Farrar and then transferred to NTSC videotape in 1995. It was digitized in February 2011. J.R. Farrar, amputee instructor, shot these scenes of amputee rehabilitation using the family 8mm movie camera. I apologize for the fuzzyness of the images, but this was in the days before autofocus. The construction of Bushnell General Hospital in Brigham City, Utah was begun a couple months after Pearl Harbor. It was substantially complete by the end of 1942 and accepted its first Army casualties in the Fall of that year. The hospital operated until 1947. It primarily treated amputees whose homes were in the western U.S. It received the first supplies of penicillin in the United States for experimental use on the wounds of military casualties. Many of the side effects of this first miracle drug were discovered at Bushnell. The rehabilitation program included teaching the amputees how to do everyday tasks, drive cars and ride horses using their prostheses, as well as the gardening and crafts shown in this short video clip. The hospital staff used every method available to give the men reasons to overcome the loss of their hands, arms and legs. Army doctors worked with the machinists in the "brace shop" to design and fabricate prostheses for every unique situation.
