While instruction in woodworking generally concerned the craft of cabinetry and carpentry, early instructor David Hughes undoubtedly exposed students to the art of sculpture. Similarly, the first dramatic presentation at USU took place in 1895 when faculty, students, and local thespians presented The Galley Slave on the converted chapel stage of Old Main’s south wing. This panel highlights buildings significant to the production of art here at USU in conjunction with the ongoing Caine College of the Arts Year of the Arts celebration. Caine Performance Hall (2006-) Named for Kathryn Caine Wanlass and Manon Caine Russell, these enduring patrons of the arts also lent their name and generosity to the Caine College of the Arts in 2010. The Performance Hall, meticulously designed by Sasaki Associates, opened in January 2006. It provides unsurpassed acoustics and an intimate atmosphere for concerts and lectures. Chase Fine Arts Center (FAC) (1967-) The FAC stands as a testament to the university's commitment to the arts, and is the crowning achievement of Daryl Chase's presidency (1954-1968). Chase recognized the importance of the arts, but confessed how faculty had "lived the life of academic scavengers--making use of outmoded and rejected structures... With the new Center," Chase acknowledged, "Utah State University answers a pressing need to remove physical handicaps that have fettered the Arts in their mission to strengthen the mind and spirit…” The university complemented the FAC with a Visual Arts Wing in 1981. Caine Lyric Theatre (1913-) Built shortly after the 1912 Thatcher Opera House fire, the university acquired the Lyric in 1967, promising the Thatcher Family to restore the venue to its past prominence. It has since become a landmark in Logan's downtown, serving a half-million patrons, during more than 200 productions. The Caine Lyric Theatre also hosts the student-led Lyric Repertory Company. Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) (1982-) Named for benefactor Nora Eccles Harrison, NEHMA specializes in collecting, preserving, and displaying 20th and 21st century American art with a special emphasis on the art of the American West. Following a two-year, $5 million renovation, NEHMA will reopen in spring 2018 . She talks about competitive swimming, about receiving a full-ride scholarship to swim at Brigham Young University, converting to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church, and being homesick when she was first in the U.S. She also talks about not feeling like she fit in either the U.S. or back in Mexico, especially with Mexican Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saintss because she was much taller and more educated than most. Title A name given to the resource Dolph Andrus's Monumental Highway Expeditions Description An account of the resource <p class="cdm_style">Monument Valley, with skyward reaching red rock monuments, has long been symbolic of the rugged deserts of the American West. However, before Western films, television shows, and commercials established its fame, Monument Valley was virtually inaccessible for locals and tourists. Even after the invention of the automobile, the absence of an effective road system in the harsh terrain did little to heighten its accessibility. Dolph Andrus, of Bluff, Utah, set out to change that and was convinced that he could open Monument Valley to automobile tourism.</p> <p>In the Spring of 1917, Andrus left Bluff, Utah with William H. Hopkins, a dentist and enthusiastic photographer, to complete an automobile journey through Monument Valley, on to Kayenta, Tuba City, and Lee&rsquo;s Ferry, Arizona. Later that summer, Andrus set off again with photographer, L. W. Clement with the intent to photograph the natural bridges and monuments of the valley. Andrus&rsquo;s wife, Irene, and daughter, Torma, accompanied them on this trip in which burros were used for transportation.</p> <p class="cdm_style">The bulk of this collection consists of the photographs taken during these tours of Monument Valley, Natural Bridges National Monuments, Zion National Park, the Colorado River, and the San Juan River. Andrus&rsquo;s Maxwell automobile is featured in many of the images. Also in the collection is the personal history of Dolph and Irene Andrus and log of these trips.
