Rob Cruz talks about his childhood in California, growing up around a his father’s extended family, including his grandparents who immigrated from Mexico; later moving an hour away to an area with lots of space close to the Los Angeles Mountains: the San Gabriel; he also a talks about his parent’s decision not to teach their children Spanish (his father’s language) in order for the children to “assimilate” more easily. He talks about growing up with parents of different religions: Catholic and LDS [Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] and the conflict about religion; he talked about converting to the LDS Church and serving a mission. He talks about being the first person in his family to attend and graduate from college and the reasons behind his choice of career in the Forest Service, including work with NEPA, as the Cache District Ranger and now as a Forest Health Regional Coordinator. He explains some of the challenges he faced as a Forest Ranger, including working with local people and elected officials and winter recreation issues; and also talks about how he met and married his wife.

She talks about choosing to accept a swimming scholarship at BYU [Brigham Young University] over an offer to walk on the University of Texas at Austin swim team. She talks about feeling like a misfit (stuck between two cultures) after coming to the U.S. She talks about beginning to date “American” boys her fifth year of college; and meeting and marrying a young man from Utah. She also talks about her family. She gives her opinion about the differences between small communities and larger communities and competition. She talks about prejudices she has faced as a Latina and woman coach. She talks about the difficulties a multicultural couple faces. She also compares Mexican and American culture and tradition.

She also talks about traveling with George for his work as an engineer for the US Government (State Department) to: Peru, Haiti, Philippines, Brazil, Colombia, Panama; and finally settling in Cache Valley, Utah. She talks about flying and sailing to and from the U.S. and Honduras as a youth, including sailing on “the White Fleet,’ and the “Banana Boat.” She talks about her children growing up in Logan; and about her grandchildren, her studies, volunteer work, especially at the hospital and Cache Valley Community Health Clinic; about receiving the Utah Governor’s Silver Bowl Award for service. Mr. Rolando Murillo talks about his childhood in El Salvador, his move to the United States because of the civil war in his country, his studies, his jobs including his current position at Cache Valley Insurance, working with Hispanic clientele, a job that he speaks both Spanish and English. He also talks about his family and the importance of education. He gives his opinion on social and cultural issues in the U.S. and Utah, including his work with ACELA, Asociación Cultural Educativa Latino Americana, founded in Ogden in 2000 and their work on immigration reform. He talks about the need for diversity in Utah. He talks about “glass ceiling” at some work environments and discrimination. The interview ends with Rolando’s final message to the future generations including a need for education and a desire for greater graduation rates for Latino youths and the desire for this project to include all Latinos, not just those at the university.
