<text><p class="cdm_style">Monument Valley, with skyward reaching red rock monuments, has long been symbolic of the rugged deserts of the American West. However, before Western films, television shows, and commercials established its fame, Monument Valley was virtually inaccessible for locals and tourists. Even after the invention of the automobile, the absence of an effective road system in the harsh terrain did little to heighten its accessibility. Dolph Andrus, of Bluff, Utah, set out to change that and was convinced that he could open Monument Valley to automobile tourism.</p>
<p>In the Spring of 1917, Andrus left Bluff, Utah with William H. Hopkins, a dentist and enthusiastic photographer, to complete an automobile journey through Monument Valley, on to Kayenta, Tuba City, and Lee&rsquo;s Ferry, Arizona. Later that summer, Andrus set off again with photographer, L. W. Clement with the intent to photograph the natural bridges and monuments of the valley. Andrus&rsquo;s wife, Irene, and daughter, Torma, accompanied them on this trip in which burros were used for transportation.</p>
<p class="cdm_style">The bulk of this collection consists of the photographs taken during these tours of Monument Valley, Natural Bridges National Monuments, Zion National Park, the Colorado River, and the San Juan River. Andrus&rsquo;s Maxwell automobile is featured in many of the images. Also in the collection is the personal history of Dolph and Irene Andrus and log of these trips. The Monumental Highway Digital Collection is comprised of the <a href="http://digital.lib.usu.edu/config/%20http:/nwda.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv26892" target="_blank">Dolph Andrus Monumental Highway Photograph Collection (P0360)</a> and the <a href="http://nwda.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv21139" target="_blank">Dr. William H. <text>Jack London, legendary author of adventure classics such as Call of the Wild and White Fang, came from blue-collar beginnings and was largely self-taught. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, &ldquo;mammy&rdquo; Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky. Other items in the digital collection include photographs and book covers. For more details about London&rsquo;s life as well as a full inventory of USU&rsquo;s larger print collection of Jack and Charmian London materials, see <a href="http://uda-db.orbiscascade.org/findaid/ark:/80444/xv27206">http://uda-db.orbiscascade.org/findaid/ark:/80444/xv27206</a>. Merrill-Cazier Library's Special Collections and Archives houses one of the largest Jack London manuscript collections in the world, second only to the prestigious Huntington Library in San Marino, California. This acquisition was a result of the close personal and professional relationship between Irving Shepard, Jack London's nephew and executor of his literary estate, and King Hendricks, a prominent London scholar and English professor at USU. Thanks to a series of purchases and donations from the London estate made between 1964 and 1971, USU is now proud to provide online access to selected material from the collection.</text>

The Lighted "A" on the Hill
A beneficiary of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act passed by Congress and signed by President Lincoln in 1862, the Utah Territorial Legislature created the Utah Agricultural College in 1888. Two years later, the south wing of Old Main opened for classes in September. Built in three stages, and designed by three different architects, Old Main has anchored the university for nearly 130 year.s.

Flush with cash after the Territorial Legislature nearly doubled the college's budget request in 1892, the Board of Trustees scrapped the original plans to complete Old Main drawn by C. L. Thompson, and adopted Karl C. Schaub's design for an enlarged central section to adjoin the south and north wings. After completing the north wing and the connecting center structure, a financial panic ensued in 1893, forcing the college to operate on a shoestring budget for the next seven years. In 1901, the economy finally improved, allowing completing of Old Main. H. H. Mahler, the third and final architect to work on Old Main, designed the now familiar tower adorned with its famous blue "A."

one time, Old Main contained the college

workshops, laboratories, and classrooms. In
fact, instruction in every subject from English to
Animal Science has taken place within the walls
of Old Main. At the insistence of President J.W.
Sanborn, students also participated in
mandatory, non-denominational chapel
exercises. The president kept attendance, even
issuing several demerits to his son Harry for
shirking the obligation.

Old Main also featured other non-classroom
facilities, such as a museum and a gymnasium
on the third floor. In fact, the utility of Old Main
made it subject to frequent remodeling in order
to accommodate an expanding faculty, staff,
and student body.

In addition to skipping chapel services, the Demerit
Book also noted other student infractions.

Students held their early college balls and dances in the gymnasium. It also
served the needs of women students who could opt for physical culture
classes rather than military drill, which was mandatory until the 1950s.

<text>The disastrous fire of December 19, 1983, required the extensive renovation of Old Main. The fire began in the attic of the north wing, and thanks to the quick action of local firefighters, did not spread to the rest of the building. Water damage, however, decimated the northern section. Renovation plans called for gutting the fire-damaged portions, and remodeling Old Main’s entire interior. In order to maximize space, the university decided to restore Old Main’s historic exterior, but modernize the interior to increase the number of classrooms and offices. Like a “phoenix from the ashes,” Old Main rose to continue as USU’s flagship building.
