Text Any textual data included in the document Old Main The Lighted "A" on the Hill A beneficiary of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act passed by Congress and signed by President Lincoln in 1862, the Utah Territorial Legislature created the Utah Agricultural College in 1888. Two years later, the south wing of Old Main opened for classes in September. Built in three stages, and designed by three different architects, Old Main has anchored the university for nearly 130 year.s. Students studying in the Old Main Library reading room, 1903. Flush with cash after the Territorial Legislature nearly doubled the college's budget request in 1892, the Board of Trustees scrapped the original plans to complete Old Main drawn by C. L. Thompson, and adopted Karl C. Schaub's design for an enlarged central section to adjoin the south and north wings. After completing the north wing and the connecting center structure, a financial panic ensued in 1893, forcing the college to operate on a shoestring budget for the next seven years. In 1901, the economy finally improved, allowing completing of Old Main. H. H. At one time, Old Main contained the college library, auditorium, a chapel, faculty offices, workshops, laboratories, and classrooms. In fact, instruction in every subject from English to Animal Science has taken place within the walls of Old Main. At the insistence of President J.W. Sanborn, students also participated in mandatory, non-denominational chapel exercises. The president kept attendance, even issuing several demerits to his son Harry for shirking the obligation. Old Main also featured other non-classroom facilities, such as a museum and a gymnasium on the third floor. In fact, the utility of Old Main made it subject to frequent remodeling in order to accommodate an expanding faculty, staff, and student body. In addition to skipping chapel services, the Demerit Book also noted other student infractions. The fire began in the attic of the north wing, and thanks to the quick action of local firefighters, did not spread to the rest of the building. Water damage, however, decimated the northern section. Renovation plans called for gutting the fire-damaged portions, and remodeling Old Main’s entire interior. In order to maximize space, the university decided to restore Old Main’s historic exterior, but modernize the interior to increase the number of classrooms and offices. Like a “phoenix from the ashes,” Old Main rose to continue as USU’s flagship building. Text Any textual data included in the document The Old AC As Utah's land-grant institution, USU initially promoted vocation skills paired with a liberal education. These skills included agriculture, mechanical, and domestic arts. The built environment reflected this mission through the physical presence of agriculture on campus. However, by 1954, an expanding curriculum and student body required relocating the remaining agricultural facilities elsewhere. Model Barn (1891-1919) Supplied with the best equipment available, the model barn served as an agricultural laboratory, where students received hans-on instruction in animal husbandry. Its close proximity to Old Main provoked the student newspaper to complain of the "delightful odors." In 1919, local tradesmen paid the college $100 to salvage the structure. President's House (1891-) The college originally built the structure to house the Domestic Science Department in 1891. However, President Jeremiah W. Sanborn decided to make it his family residence. USU's first 13 presidents, with the exception of J. H. Paul, lived and raised families in the shadow of Old Main. Following President Stanford Cazier's relocation in 1983, the university converted the President's House to an alumni center named in honor of David B. Haight in 1990. Mechanic Arts Building (1897-1984) Built in 1897, the Mechanic Arts Building housed woodworking, blacksmithing, and mechanics shops. In 1904, a fire destroyed the building, along with many of the college's early records. Emergency funding enabled the rebuilding and modernization of the structure. As education focuses shifted, a variety of programs, including Landscape Architecture and Communicative Disorders, called the Mechanic Arts Building home. Condemned following the 1962 earthquake, the structure nonetheless received continued use until its demolition in 1984. E.G. Peterson Agricultural Science Building (1957-2012) Although the on-campus barns relocated in the 1950s, the campus retained its agricultural heritage through the E.G. Peterson Agricultural Science Building. The building opened for classes in 1957 and housed the College of Agriculture along with the Experiment Station and Extension Services until its demolition in 2012. The construction site of the new Life Sciences Building occupies the location of the former Agricultural Science Building. Art Barn (1919-2015) The peculiar white barn formerly occupying the USU Credit Union and Welcome Center site was the last agricultural facility located on campus. Constructed in 1919 to replace the model barn, the facility served agricultural purposes until 1959, when the Art Department converted it to a ceramics studio. The Art Barn continued as a classroom and office space until its demolition in 2015. Text Any textual data included in the document Year of the Arts From its beginnings, USU has fashioned students into well-rounded citizens by not only offering practical training, but also liberal education in the arts and music. While instruction in woodworking generally concerned the craft of cabinetry and carpentry, early instructor David Hughes undoubtedly exposed students to the art of sculpture. Similarly, the first dramatic presentation at USU took place in 1895 when faculty, students, and local thespians presented The Galley Slave on the converted chapel stage of Old Main’s south wing. This panel highlights buildings significant to the production of art here at USU in conjunction with the ongoing Caine College of the Arts Year of the Arts celebration. Caine Performance Hall (2006-) Named for Kathryn Caine Wanlass and Manon Caine Russell, these enduring patrons of the arts also lent their name and generosity to the Caine College of the Arts in 2010. The Performance Hall, meticulously designed by Sasaki Associates, opened in January 2006. It provides unsurpassed acoustics and an intimate atmosphere for concerts and lectures. Chase Fine Arts Center (FAC) (1967-) The FAC stands as a testament to the university's commitment to the arts, and is the crowning achievement of Daryl Chase's presidency (1954-1968). Chase recognized the importance of the arts, but confessed how faculty had "lived the life of academic scavengers--making use of outmoded and rejected structures... With the new Center," Chase acknowledged, "Utah State University answers a pressing need to remove physical handicaps that have fettered the Arts in their mission to strengthen the mind and spirit…” The university complemented the FAC with a Visual Arts Wing in 1981. Caine Lyric Theatre (1913-) Built shortly after the 1912 Thatcher Opera House fire, the university acquired the Lyric in 1967, promising the Thatcher Family to restore the venue to its past prominence. It has since become a landmark in Logan's downtown, serving a half-million patrons, during more than 200 productions. The Caine Lyric Theatre also hosts the student-led Lyric Repertory Company. Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) (1982-) Named for benefactor Nora Eccles Harrison, NEHMA specializes in collecting, preserving, and displaying 20th and 21st century American art with a special emphasis on the art of the American West. Following a two-year, $5 million renovation, NEHMA will reopen in spring 2018 . Text Any textual data included in the document Aggies at Arms Impact of World War I and World War II President E.G. Peterson and his young family had hardly moved into the President’s House when the United States became embroiled in WWI. As part of its land grant mission, USU maintains a long tradition of military training, beginning in 1892 with the arrival of Lt. Hendry D. Styer. At President E.G. Peterson’s request in 1916, the War Department commissioned the college’s Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). The military tradition became more significant as the college provided essential military education during WWI. Over 600 American “dough boys” received mechanical training and more than 1,000 students served during the Great War. USU Special Collections and Archives, A-Board Collection, Image 523 With the influx of soldiers and trainees, the campus struggled to provide adequate housing. Congress authorized construction of temporary, wooden barracks, but Peterson convinced the governor and legislature to allocate additional funds to build them from brick. Peterson’s foresight resulted in a near doubling of the physical campus by 1920. Ray B. West (Engineering) (1918-) Originally intended to house WWI military trainees and named posthumously for the first Dean of Engineering, Ray B. West, Sr., this building has been home to Engineering, Education, and presently, the English Department. Geology (Plant Science) (1918-) As with Ray B. West, the Plant Science Building never actually served its intended purpose as a barracks. After the war ended in November 1918, construction continued and the building opened for classes in 1920. Text Any textual data included in the document Military Science Building (1904-) In 1940, with the Second World War on the horizon, the college added a Military Science wing to the Field House. The building continues to house both the Army and Air Force ROTC units on campus. Old Main adorned with flags of the Allied nations celebrating the end of WWI, 1918. USU Special Collections and Archives, A-Board Collection, Image 1514 Temporary Buildings (1942-1952) Unlike WWI, few brick and mortar buildings appeared during WWII. Although less permanent, WWII was no less transformative. The college accommodated soldiers and military trainees by moving Quonset-style buildings from the abandoned Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp up Cub River Canyon near Franklin, Idaho. More than 2,000 trainees received instruction in a variety of programs, including aviation and radio. The Navy Radio School involved the new technology of radar, which required the government to prohibit photography on campus during WWII Temporary Quonset huts under construction, 1940s.
