An account of the resource
Jack London, legendary author of adventure classics such as Call of the Wild and White Fang, came from blue-collar beginnings and was largely self-taught. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, “mammy” Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky. Other items in the digital collection include photographs and book covers. it—appreciate your rrotive in having Paul Reynolds send over
the two manuscripts, Samuel and Told, in the T)reoling Ward.
Frankly, as ycu anticipated, 1 am afraid that our
■readers would find it a bit of an effort to get the most out
of the Island McGlll dialect, excellently as it Is done. But
for this feature of the story, we would have no hesitancy in
taking it. Our feeling, however, Is that this Is not quits
the medium for that particular story.
Six we~ks or two months h'^nce you ere going to need
a change of thought or a bit of relief in case you are working
on a. novel, and you are going to decide that the best way to
•refresh or relieve yourself is to write a i;hort story. Then
you are going to do a bully good one and send it to us or 1
toiss my guess.

This letter from Fred J. Rieger, a Salt Lake City whole sale liquor dealer, to the Becker Brewing and Malting Company complains about the state required renewal of liquor licenses on July 30, 1917, even though all alcohol will be banned in Utah just two days later. Prohibition in Utah began on August 1, 1917 as stipulated by the Young Prohibition Bill, which was passed in the Utah state legislature earlier that year. The letter also reveals the urgency felt by those in the liquor business. The letter, rather frantically, implores the Becker's to write their state congressmen and senators as soon as possible and request that this issue of the licenses be resolved.

Many businesses that produced and sold alcohol went out of business after the enactment of prohibition because unlike the Becker Brewing and Malting Company, they could not find an alternative source of revenue.

Jack London at Utah State University
Description
An account of the resource
Jack London, legendary author of adventure classics such as Call of the Wild and White Fang, came from blue-collar beginnings and was largely self-taught. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, “mammy” Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky. Other items in the digital collection include photographs and book covers. Merrill-Cazier Library's Special Collections and Archives houses one of the largest Jack London manuscript collections in the world, second only to the prestigious Huntington Library in San Marino, California. This acquisition was a result of the close personal and professional relationship between Irving Shepard, Jack London's nephew and executor of his literary estate, and King Hendricks, a prominent London scholar and English professor at USU. Thanks to a series of purchases and donations from the London estate made between 1964 and 1971, USU is now proud to provide online access to selected material from the collection.

Liberty Bell replica at Mendon School, 1950, during the U.S. Treasury's Savings Bond Independence Drive, "Tour of the Bells". The bell is mounted on the back of a Ford series F-5 truck, donated by Ford Motor Company.
Scanned by Utah State University Merrill-Cazier Library using Epson Expression 10000 scanner, 24-bit RGB, at 600 dpi. Archival file is uncompressed TIFF (600 dpi); display file is JPEG2000.
