In this handwritten account, Sorensen chronicles events in Mendon, Utah, many of which he witnessed firsthand. Isaac Sorensen was born on February 24, 1840, in Sjaelland, Denmark. He became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after missionaries visited his father in 1854. The family relocated to Mill Creek, Utah, in 1857, and Sorensen soon moved to Cache Valley where he helped establish the community of Mendon. Sorensen remained a resident and community leader in Mendon until his death on November 7, 1922. This was the boyhood home and farm of my great grandfather, Nicolai Sorensen, son of Soren Abrahamsen, dating back to the year 1800, and originally consisting of about 69 acres. As was quite typical at the time for that part of the country, the home was built to form a square; about 150 feet on each side, with a courtyard at the center, surrounded by buildings that once housed a shop, stables and additional living quarters. The home was the birthplace of my grandfather, Isaac Sorensen, and eight additional brothers and sisters. Nicolai and his family joined the LDS Church (the Mormons) in 1854, and then, in 1857, decided to sell their home and land and embark on an epic journey to America, arriving in the Salt Lake City area in September, 1857. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, &ldquo;mammy&rdquo; Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky.
