Text Any textual data included in the document The Old AC As Utah's land-grant institution, USU initially promoted vocation skills paired with a liberal education. These skills included agriculture, mechanical, and domestic arts. The built environment reflected this mission through the physical presence of agriculture on campus. However, by 1954, an expanding curriculum and student body required relocating the remaining agricultural facilities elsewhere. Model Barn (1891-1919) Supplied with the best equipment available, the model barn served as an agricultural laboratory, where students received hans-on instruction in animal husbandry. Its close proximity to Old Main provoked the student newspaper to complain of the "delightful odors." In 1919, local tradesmen paid the college $100 to salvage the structure. President's House (1891-) The college originally built the structure to house the Domestic Science Department in 1891. However, President Jeremiah W. Sanborn decided to make it his family residence. USU's first 13 presidents, with the exception of J. H. Paul, lived and raised families in the shadow of Old Main. Following President Stanford Cazier's relocation in 1983, the university converted the President's House to an alumni center named in honor of David B. Haight in 1990. Mechanic Arts Building (1897-1984) Built in 1897, the Mechanic Arts Building housed woodworking, blacksmithing, and mechanics shops. In 1904, a fire destroyed the building, along with many of the college's early records. Emergency funding enabled the rebuilding and modernization of the structure. As education focuses shifted, a variety of programs, including Landscape Architecture and Communicative Disorders, called the Mechanic Arts Building home. Condemned following the 1962 earthquake, the structure nonetheless received continued use until its demolition in 1984. E.G. Peterson Agricultural Science Building (1957-2012) Although the on-campus barns relocated in the 1950s, the campus retained its agricultural heritage through the E.G. Peterson Agricultural Science Building. The building opened for classes in 1957 and housed the College of Agriculture along with the Experiment Station and Extension Services until its demolition in 2012. The construction site of the new Life Sciences Building occupies the location of the former Agricultural Science Building. Art Barn (1919-2015) The peculiar white barn formerly occupying the USU Credit Union and Welcome Center site was the last agricultural facility located on campus. Constructed in 1919 to replace the model barn, the facility served agricultural purposes until 1959, when the Art Department converted it to a ceramics studio. The Art Barn continued as a classroom and office space until its demolition in 2015. Text Any textual data included in the document Year of the Arts From its beginnings, USU has fashioned students into well-rounded citizens by not only offering practical training, but also liberal education in the arts and music. While instruction in woodworking generally concerned the craft of cabinetry and carpentry, early instructor David Hughes undoubtedly exposed students to the art of sculpture. Similarly, the first dramatic presentation at USU took place in 1895 when faculty, students, and local thespians presented The Galley Slave on the converted chapel stage of Old Main’s south wing. This panel highlights buildings significant to the production of art here at USU in conjunction with the ongoing Caine College of the Arts Year of the Arts celebration. Caine Performance Hall (2006-) Named for Kathryn Caine Wanlass and Manon Caine Russell, these enduring patrons of the arts also lent their name and generosity to the Caine College of the Arts in 2010. The Performance Hall, meticulously designed by Sasaki Associates, opened in January 2006. It provides unsurpassed acoustics and an intimate atmosphere for concerts and lectures. Chase Fine Arts Center (FAC) (1967-) The FAC stands as a testament to the university's commitment to the arts, and is the crowning achievement of Daryl Chase's presidency (1954-1968). Chase recognized the importance of the arts, but confessed how faculty had "lived the life of academic scavengers--making use of outmoded and rejected structures... With the new Center," Chase acknowledged, "Utah State University answers a pressing need to remove physical handicaps that have fettered the Arts in their mission to strengthen the mind and spirit…” The university complemented the FAC with a Visual Arts Wing in 1981. Caine Lyric Theatre (1913-) Built shortly after the 1912 Thatcher Opera House fire, the university acquired the Lyric in 1967, promising the Thatcher Family to restore the venue to its past prominence. It has since become a landmark in Logan's downtown, serving a half-million patrons, during more than 200 productions. The Caine Lyric Theatre also hosts the student-led Lyric Repertory Company. Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) (1982-) Named for benefactor Nora Eccles Harrison, NEHMA specializes in collecting, preserving, and displaying 20th and 21st century American art with a special emphasis on the art of the American West. Following a two-year, $5 million renovation, NEHMA will reopen in spring 2018 . Text Any textual data included in the document Aggies at Arms Impact of World War I and World War II President E.G. Peterson and his young family had hardly moved into the President’s House when the United States became embroiled in WWI. As part of its land grant mission, USU maintains a long tradition of military training, beginning in 1892 with the arrival of Lt. Hendry D. Styer. At President E.G. Peterson’s request in 1916, the War Department commissioned the college’s Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). The military tradition became more significant as the college provided essential military education during WWI. Over 600 American “dough boys” received mechanical training and more than 1,000 students served during the Great War. Congress authorized construction of temporary, wooden barracks, but Peterson convinced the governor and legislature to allocate additional funds to build them from brick. Peterson’s foresight resulted in a near doubling of the physical campus by 1920. Ray B. West (Engineering) (1918-) Originally intended to house WWI military trainees and named posthumously for the first Dean of Engineering, Ray B. West, Sr., this building has been home to Engineering, Education, and presently, the English Department. Geology (Plant Science) (1918-) As with Ray B. West, the Plant Science Building never actually served its intended purpose as a barracks. After the war ended in November 1918, construction continued and the building opened for classes in 1920. Opening for classes in 1920, the college creamery relocated to its basement, where Professor Gustav Wilster began perfecting the recipe for Aggie Ice Cream. Greek Row (1940-) A persistent housing shortage at Utah State made sororities and fraternities popular among students inclined to join these organizations. Most early Greek houses were located throughout downtown Logan. In 1940, Sigma Chi fraternity built the first house along Greek Row at the corner of 700 North and 800 East. Other fraternities and sororities soon followed. Library (1930-2005) In 1930, a $175,000 state appropriation enabled construction of the first library building. Quickly outgrowing the 80,000 book and 300-student capacity, the university expanded the library in 1966 by essentially building a brick and mortar box around the existing structure. Named for retiring Vice President Milton R. Merrill in 1970, the library again outgrew itself. In 2003, the university planned to conjoin the Science and Technology Library, named after retired president, Stanford O. Cazier, with a new facility. The resulting Merrill-Cazier Library opened in 2005, as crews demolished the old Merrill Library. Today, the Stan L. Albrecht Agriculture Sciences Building occupies the space of the former library. Taggart Student Center (1952-) The Aggies realized their dream of a permanent student center in 1952, when the college relocated most of the remaining livestock barns to accommodate a new Student Union Building (today’s Taggart Student Center). The original facility included a soda fountain, bowling alley, a student health office, bookstore, ballroom, and cafeteria. Named for retiring president Glen L. Taggart, the Taggart Student Center, after 66 years and several renovations and additions, still provides students a place for social events, a quick snack, or a nap on one of many couches. Aggies value their education, but also enjoy social activities, recreation, relaxation, and taking a break from their studies. USU’s built environment reflects these student needs. (Repeat Chorus) I went into the Main Hall, ‘Twas empty as a tomb, But over in the club house, There’s barely standing room. (Repeat Chorus) Oh Saturdays I missed my home, ‘Twas then we used to scrub. But now when I feel lonely, I jump into the TUB. (Repeat Chorus) College Bluebird (1920-1974) While not part of the campus proper, the College Bluebird holds a special place in the heart of many former Aggies. The Cardon family opened the extension of the downtown café on College Hill during the 1920s. The ban on campus smoking, which endured until after WWII, made the “Bird” a favorite hangout for those students and faculty who enjoyed a cigarette with their coffee. Although it remained open until 1974, the Cardon family sold the property to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) in 1962. Today, sections of the LDS Institute of Religion occupy the site of the former College Bluebird. Home Economics/Commons (1935-) Despite the Great Depression, USAC added some of its most architecturally interesting structures during the 1930s. Completed in 1935 using federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds, the Home Economics Building (Family Life), housed the School of Home Economics, along with the student newspaper and yearbook offices. It also included a bookstore and cafeteria, and served as the campus commons. Considered one of Utah’s finest examples of Art Deco style architecture, the National Park Service listed it on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Temporary Union Building (1945-1952) In 1945, determined Aggies remodeled the old army mess hall (moved to campus during WWII), transforming it into the Temporary Union Building (or TUB for short). Students danced, sipped Coca-Cola, and listened to the popular music of the day. One student even celebrated the TUB by composing his own rendition of the Andrews Sisters’ Pistol Packin’ Mama. Text Any textual data included in the document Smart Gymnasium (1912-1969) In 1912, Board of Trustee member Thomas Smart donated funds to construct a college gymnasium. The Smart Gymnasium offered exercise facilities for the student body including a heated pool. Most importantly, it provided a home for Aggie basketball, previously relegated to leasing facilities at its chief, local rival, the Brigham Young College. Razed in 1969, the Smart Gym site became a parking lot until construction of today’s Living Learning Community. Field House (1939-) As state appropriations languished during the 1930s Depression, the College Building Association proposed using federal Public Works Administration funds to build two identical field houses, one at the college, the other at the University of Utah. The new buildings opened concurrently in January 1940. In 1956, the Board of Trustees named the USAC field house in honor of longtime wrestling coach and team trainer George “Doc” Nelson Spectrum (1970-) The Utah State Assembly Center hosted its grand opening on December 1, 1970. In February 1971, the university officially christened the Assembly Center as the Spectrum and soon after named it for Smith’s Food Stores founder, Dee Glen Smith. The Smith Spectrum replaced the Field House as the home to Aggie basketball and gymnastics; it also serves as a venue for concerts, commencement, and other community events. Text Any textual data included in the document Life on College Hill University Housing Student housing has been a recurrent problem at USU. Although a women’s dormitory was among the earliest college buildings, most students found room and board with local, downtown residents. Particularly pronounced as WWII veterans returned after 1946, the housing shortage required erecting military surplus buildings to house married students. The campus employed a number of resourceful ideas to meet student housing needs, endeavoring to accommodate an ever-growing university population. Residence Hall (1891-1970) Built in 1891, the Residence Hall rested at the bottom of College Hill and originally served as a women’s facility. Popular stories of the time tell of young men using the fire escape to serenade potential sweethearts. The college later converted it to a “clubhouse” for both men and women, who occupied separate floors. In 1909, the structure became home to the School of Domestic Science, then home to the School of Forestry after completion of the Home Economics Building in 1935. Forestry, along with Range and Wildlife Sciences remained in the aging building until construction of the Biology/Natural Resources Building (BNR) in 1960. Demolished in 1970, the Aggie Terrace sits on the former site of the dormitory. Lund Hall (1937-2013) Taking advantage of depression-era funding, the college built a new women’s dormitory east of the library in 1938. Named for college stalwart Anthon L. Lund, the building later housed student athletes through 1970, and lastly the Mathematics and Statistics Department. The National Park Service placed Lund Hall on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Contractors razed the dormitory to accommodate Huntsman Hall in 2013. Text Any textual data included in the document Housing Crisis (1946-1960s) The college continued using the temporary military structures moved to campus during WWII for housing and classrooms. To help relieve the housing crisis for thousands of returning veterans and their families, the university purchased trailer homes, Quonset huts, and tropical bungalows, which remained in service until construction of Aggie Village during the 1960s. The Field House provided bunk beds for single men, while Lund Hall housed twice as many women students as originally designed. The last remaining Quonset hut on campus now houses Utah Public Radio.
