<p>Since the first local newspaper slid off the printing press in 1879<a title="" href="#_edn1">[i]</a>, Cache Valley residents have relied heavily on evolving forms of media for news and entertainment. This progression of newspaper, radio, and television outlets depended largely on the hard work and ingenuity of local entrepreneurs. Among these valley media pioneers, the Bullen family stands out for its enduring contribution to the development of communication resources in Cache Valley, which spanned nearly a century. <p>Since the first local newspaper slid off the printing press in 1879<a title="" href="#_edn1">[i]</a>, Cache Valley residents have relied heavily on evolving forms of media for news and entertainment. This progression of newspaper, radio, and television outlets depended largely on the hard work and ingenuity of local entrepreneurs. Among these valley media pioneers, the Bullen family stands out for its enduring contribution to the development of communication resources in Cache Valley, which spanned nearly a century. Jack London at Utah State University
Description
An account of the resource
Jack London, legendary author of adventure classics such as Call of the Wild and White Fang, came from blue-collar beginnings and was largely self-taught. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, “mammy” Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky. Other items in the digital collection include photographs and book covers. Merrill-Cazier Library's Special Collections and Archives houses one of the largest Jack London manuscript collections in the world, second only to the prestigious Huntington Library in San Marino, California. This acquisition was a result of the close personal and professional relationship between Irving Shepard, Jack London's nephew and executor of his literary estate, and King Hendricks, a prominent London scholar and English professor at USU. Thanks to a series of purchases and donations from the London estate made between 1964 and 1971, USU is now proud to provide online access to selected material from the collection.

Dolph Andrus's Monumental Highway Expeditions

<p class="cdm_style">Monument Valley, with skyward reaching red rock monuments, has long been symbolic of the rugged deserts of the American West. However, before Western films, television shows, and commercials established its fame, Monument Valley was virtually inaccessible for locals and tourists. Even after the invention of the automobile, the absence of an effective road system in the harsh terrain did little to heighten its accessibility. Dolph Andrus, of Bluff, Utah, set out to change that and was convinced that he could open Monument Valley to automobile tourism.</p>
<p>In the Spring of 1917, Andrus left Bluff, Utah with William H. Hopkins, a dentist and enthusiastic photographer, to complete an automobile journey through Monument Valley, on to Kayenta, Tuba City, and Lee’s Ferry, Arizona. Later that summer, Andrus set off again with photographer, L. W. Clement with the intent to photograph the natural bridges and monuments of the valley. Andrus’s wife, Irene, and daughter, Torma, accompanied them on this trip in which burros were used for transportation.</p>
<p class="cdm_style">The bulk of this collection consists of the photographs taken during these tours of Monument Valley, Natural Bridges National Monuments, Zion National Park, the Colorado River, and the San Juan River. Andrus’s Maxwell automobile is featured in many of the images. Also in the collection is the personal history of Dolph and Irene Andrus and log of these trips. The Monumental Highway Digital Collection is comprised of the <a href="http://digital.lib.usu.edu/config/%20http:/nwda.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv26892" target="_blank">Dolph Andrus Monumental Highway Photograph Collection (P0360)</a> and the <a href="http://nwda.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv21139" target="_blank">Dr. William H. Hopkins Addendum Collection (P0542)</a>. </p>

<p>Since the first local newspaper slid off the printing press in 1879<a title="" href="#_edn1">[i]</a>, Cache Valley residents have relied heavily on evolving forms of media for news and entertainment. This progression of newspaper, radio, and television outlets depended largely on the hard work and ingenuity of local entrepreneurs. Among these valley media pioneers, the Bullen family stands out for its enduring contribution to the development of communication resources in Cache Valley, which spanned nearly a century. Nicolai Sorensen home in Kirke Fjenneslev, Denmark. Photograph taken by Michael Robert Sorensen and submitted by Robert Sorensen with the following information: "[The Sorensen] ancestral family home at Kirke Fjenneslev on the island of Sjaelland in Denmark. This was the boyhood home and farm of my great grandfather, Nicolai Sorensen, son of Soren Abrahamsen, dating back to the year 1800, and originally consisting of about 69 acres. As was quite typical at the time for that part of the country, the home was built to form a square; about 150 feet on each side, with a courtyard at the center, surrounded by buildings that once housed a shop, stables and additional living quarters. The home was the birthplace of my grandfather, Isaac Sorensen, and eight additional brothers and sisters. Nicolai and his family joined the LDS Church (the Mormons) in 1854, and then, in 1857, decided to sell their home and land and embark on an epic journey to America, arriving in the Salt Lake City area in September, 1857. Nicolai, who was born in 1799, married his wife Malena in 1830. Both died on the same day on March 30, 1887. Details of this journey are depicted on the family website at SorensenFamilyHistory.org."
