<text>Utah State University sprouted from humble beginnings - a solitary building on a windy and arid hill. However, over the next 130 years, the university grew, constructing numerous buildings; several of the historic structures stand today as reminders of the institution’s past. Additionally, many structures were demolished as campus and curriculum development called for updated facilities. Yet, despite the fluctuating environment, the university’s commitment to providing students and faculty with quality education, recreation, and housing facilities remains steadfast. This obligation ensures that the Utah State University campus will continue to grow and adapt to meet future challenges presented by an ever-expanding student body and changing educational landscape.

              <text>Educating Utah The Extension Campus

In addition to educating students on Logan’s campus, USU has “extended” its land-grant mission by providing educational opportunities throughout the state since 1896. While creation of the Cooperative Extension Service in 1914 had particular significance for rural farm families, USU, throughout its history, built a variety of campus buildings and educational centers pursuant to making higher education available to Utah’s citizens.

Experiment Station Building (1890-)
Built in 1890, the Experiment Station is one of the oldest extant buildings on campus. From 1890 to 1956, the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station served as the clearinghouse for all institutional research. As researchers developed new agricultural methods, the Extension Service disseminated them to the state’s practitioners. Experiment Station administration moved to the E.G. Peterson Agricultural Science Building in 1956. The renovated Experiment Station Building is presently home to the Public Relations and Marketing Department.

Rural Arts Building (1941-2003)
Completed in 1941, National Youth Administration laborers (130 students) constructed the Rural Arts Building at the close of the Great Depression. It served as housing for rural people attending conferences and workshops offered by Extension Services, replacing the Farmer Encampment “tent city” formerly staged on the Quad. Razed in 2003, the Merrill-Cazier Library now sits on the site.

Distance Education Building (2012-)
In 2005 USU renewed its commitment to Extension education by creating Regional Campuses and adopting a Distance Education Program. As a result of this, the Distance Education Building opened as a “nerve center” for the program in 2012. Today, USU offers more than 40 degrees through online education and hosts over 25 different campus Extension locations throughout Utah.

In 1939, Laval Morris, a former student of Emil Hansen, returned to USAC and founded the Department of Landscape Architecture. Morris and his students, especially Kenji Shiozawa, one of the first students to graduate from the program, played an important role in developing the campus during the postwar boom.

Student Gifts and A-Day/Agathon Projects
Markers inset into many of the sidewalks and stairways near Old Main proclaim the involvement of students in developing the campus grounds. Each spring, Aggies dropped their pencils and picked up shovels for the annual A-Day festivities. Students were expected to participate. A Student Association vigilante squad often rounded up “shirkers,” trying them before a student court. A-Day activities included a morning of construction, usually laying concrete for new walkways, followed with lunch prepared by Home Economics students. Afternoons featured athletic contests, and ended with a dance in the evening. The 1921 A-Day project is particularly important because students, under Emil Hansen’s supervision, laid out walkways and planted Norway Maples, some of which still adorn the perimeters of the Quad. A-Day became the weeklong celebration Agathon during the 1950s. Although it disappeared during the 1970s, the Alumni Association resurrected the event during the 1980s, and today’s A-Week still consists of service opportunities, along with other student events.</text>

              <text>Growin

The layout and maintenance of the college grounds has
been an integral part of the built environment since the founding of the university. Initially,
the barren College Hill consisted of little more than sagebrush and wind. However, as the
buildings continued to grow so did the number of trees and green space.

President John A. Widtsoe
In 1912, President Widtsoe engaged the east coast architectural firm of Pray, White, and Hubbard to
produce the first campus master plan. The plan clearly laid out the central campus, placing
prospective buildings east of Old Main along the north and south sides of a campus green, today’s
Quad. While the architects provided a vision for ordering the campus, they gave little advice
concerning the type of trees and other ornamentals to plant. Therefore, the sprouting Agricultural
College sought outside assistance to beautify its grounds

Emil Hansen
In 1914, Emil Hansen, a landscape gardener born and educated in Denmark, became the first
superintendent of grounds at the college. Hansen brought to his position a unique eye for detail and knowledge of plants capable of thriving under local conditions. By 1919, Hansen had developed his own vision for the campus, proposing a variety of planted beds and landscaping that added depth and design to the 1912 master plan. For 15 years, Hansen worked to beautify the appearance of campus. During the 1920s, he guided the plowing and replanting of the central Quad, the laying of walkways, and the planting of trees. With President E.G. Peterson’s unswerving support, Hansen’s efforts permitted the college to become one of the most compact and scenic campuses in the western U.S. Capitalizing on campus aesthetics, Peterson announced the opening of a National Summer School (NSS) in 1924. During its first four years, visiting professors from many of the most prestigious institutions in the nation, including David Star Jordan (Stanford), Frederick Jackson Turner (Harvard), and Liberty Hyde Bailey (Cornell) spent six weeks of their summer lecturing in Logan.</text>

Utilizing post-war federal housing funds in 1955, the college built Moen,Greaves, and Reeder Halls, the first women’s dormitories added to campus since Lund Hall in 1938. Three years later the college erected Richards and Bullen Halls for male students. In 1964, Mountain View and Valley View Towers added to the growing list of university housing. While these new buildings helped to ease some of the housing pressure, providing enough living space for the student body continues to challenge and change the university and its landscape to this day. In 1962, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) built and managed the David O. McKay Student Living Center. The facility catered to the university’s LDS student body and included both men’s and women’s dormitories. The university acquired the so-called “Morm Dorms” during the 1980s, retaining the Student Living Center designation, but renaming them in honor of university faculty and benefactors.

relieve the housing crisis for thousands of returning veterans and

              <text>Life on College Hill
University Housing

Student housing has been a recurrent problem at USU. Although a women’s dormitory was among the earliest college buildings, most students found room and board with local, downtown residents. Particularly pronounced as WWII veterans returned after 1946, the housing shortage required erecting military surplus buildings to house married students. The campus employed a number of resourceful ideas to meet student housing needs, endeavoring to accommodate an ever-growing university population.

Residence Hall (1891-1970)
Built in 1891, the Residence Hall rested at
the bottom of College Hill and originally
served as a women’s facility. Popular
stories of the time tell of young men using
the fire escape to serenade potential
sweethearts. The college later converted it
to a “clubhouse” for both men and women,
who occupied separate floors. In 1909, the
structure became home to the School of
Domestic Science, then home to the School of
Forestry after completion of the Home
Economics Building in 1935. Forestry, along with
Range and Wildlife Sciences remained in the
aging building until construction of the
Biology/Natural Resources Building (BNR) in
1960. Demolished in 1970, the Aggie Terrace sits
on the former site of the dormitory.

Lund Hall (1937-2013)
Taking advantage of depression-era funding, the college built a new
women’s dormitory east of the library in 1938. Named for college
stalwart Anthon L. Lund, the building later housed student athletes
through 1970, and lastly the Mathematics and Statistics
Department. The National Park Service placed Lund Hall on the
National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Contractors razed the
dormitory to accommodate Huntsman Hall in 2013.</text>

In 1912, Board of Trustee member Thomas Smart donated funds to construct a college gymnasium. The Smart Gymnasium offered exercise facilities for the student body including a heated pool. Most importantly, it provided a home for Aggie basketball, previously relegated to leasing facilities at its chief, local rival, the Brigham Young College. Razed in 1969, the Smart Gym site became a parking lot until construction of today’s Living Learning Community.

Field House (1939-)
As state appropriations languished during the 1930s
Depression, the College Building Association
proposed using federal Public Works Administration
funds to build two identical field houses, one at the
college, the other at the University of Utah. The new
buildings opened concurrently in January 1940. In
1956, the Board of Trustees named the USAC field
house in honor of longtime wrestling coach and team
trainer George “Doc” Nelson

Spectrum (1970-)
The Utah State Assembly
Center hosted its grand
opening on December 1, 1970.
In February 1971, the university
officially christened the
Assembly Center as the
Spectrum and soon after named
it for Smith’s Food Stores founder,
Dee Glen Smith. The Smith
Spectrum replaced the Field House as
the home to Aggie basketball and
gymnastics; it also serves as a venue for
concerts, commencement, and other
community events.</text>

              <text>Student Facilities at Utah State
The college experience has always been part study and part social life. Aggies value their education, but also enjoy social activities, recreation, relaxation, and taking a break from their studies. USU’s built environment reflects these student needs.

(Repeat Chorus)
I went into the Main Hall,
‘Twas empty as a tomb,
But over in the club house,
There’s barely standing room.
(Repeat Chorus)
Oh Saturdays I missed my home,
‘Twas then we used to scrub.
But now when I feel lonely,
I jump into the TUB.
(Repeat Chorus)

College Bluebird (1920-1974)
While not part of the campus proper, the College Bluebird holds a special place in the heart of many former Aggies. The Cardon family opened the extension of the downtown café on College Hill during the 1920s. The ban on campus smoking, which endured until after WWII, made the “Bird” a favorite hangout for those students and faculty who enjoyed a cigarette with their coffee. Although it remained open until 1974, the Cardon family sold the property to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) in 1962. Today, sections of the LDS Institute of Religion occupy the site of the former College Bluebird.

Home Economics/Commons (1935-)
Despite the Great Depression, USAC added some of its most architecturally interesting structures during the 1930s. Completed in 1935 using federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds, the Home Economics Building (Family Life), housed the School of Home Economics, along with the student newspaper and yearbook offices. It also included a bookstore and cafeteria, and served as the campus commons. Considered one of Utah’s finest examples of Art Deco style architecture, the National Park Service listed it on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Temporary Union Building (1945-1952)
In 1945, determined Aggies remodeled the old army mess hall (moved to campus during WWII), transforming it into the Temporary Union Building (or TUB for short). Students danced, sipped Coca-Cola, and listened to the popular music of the day. One student even celebrated the TUB by composing his own rendition of the Andrews Sisters’ Pistol Packin’ Mama.

at The TUB
(Tune: Pistol Packin’ Mama)
Reading books the live-long day
Is not my choice of fun.
So now there is a club house,
Boy, I’m on the run.
Chorus
Oh, meet me in the TUB gang,
Meet me in the TUB,
Leave your cares behind you,
And meet me in the TUB
The library was quiet,
The Bluebird was a jam,
Then someone told me of the TUB
And brother, here I am!

Greek Row (1940-)
A persistent housing shortage at Utah State made sororities and fraternities popular among students inclined to join these organizations. Most early Greek houses were located throughout downtown Logan. In 1940, Sigma Chi fraternity built the first house along
Greek Row at the corner of 700 North and 800 East. Other fraternities and sororities soon followed.

Library (1930-2005)
In 1930, a $175,000 state appropriation enabled construction of the first library building. Quickly outgrowing the 80,000 book and 300-student capacity, the university expanded the library in 1966 by essentially building a brick and mortar box around the existing structure. Named for retiring Vice President Milton R. Merrill in 1970, the library again outgrew itself. In 2003, the university planned to conjoin the Science and Technology Library, named after retired president, Stanford O. Cazier, with a new facility. The resulting Merrill-Cazier Library opened in 2005, as crews demolished the old Merrill Library. Today, the Stan L. Albrecht Agriculture Sciences Building occupies the space of the former library.

Taggart Student Center (1952-)
The Aggies realized their dream of a permanent student center in 1952, when the college relocated most of the remaining livestock barns to accommodate a new Student Union Building (today’s Taggart Student Center). The original facility included a soda fountain, bowling alley, a student health office, bookstore, ballroom, and cafeteria. Named for retiring president Glen L. Taggart, the Taggart Student Center, after 66 years and several renovations and additions, still provides students a place for social events, a quick snack, or a nap on one of many couches.

Temporary Buildings (1942-1952)
Unlike WWI, few brick and mortar buildings appeared during WWII. Although less permanent, WWII was no less transformative. The college accommodated soldiers and military trainees by moving Quonset-style buildings from the abandoned Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp up Cub River Canyon near Franklin, Idaho. More than 2,000 trainees received instruction in a variety of programs, including aviation and radio. The Navy Radio School involved the new technology of radar, which required the government to prohibit photography on campus during WWII

President E.G. Peterson and his young family had hardly moved into the President’s House when the United States became embroiled in WWI. As part of its land grant mission, USU maintains a long tradition of military training, beginning in 1892 with the arrival of Lt. Hendry D. Styer. At President E.G. Peterson’s request in 1916, the War Department commissioned the college’s Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). The military tradition became more significant as the college provided essential military education during WWI. Over 600 American “dough boys” received mechanical training and more than 1,000 students served during the Great War.

With the influx of soldiers and trainees, the campus struggled to provide adequate housing. Congress authorized construction of temporary, wooden barracks, but Peterson convinced the governor and legislature to allocate additional funds to build them from brick. Peterson’s foresight resulted in a near doubling of the physical campus by 1920.

Ray B. West (Engineering) (1918-)
Originally intended to house WWI military trainees and named posthumously for the first Dean of Engineering, Ray B. West, Sr., this building has been home to Engineering, Education, and presently, the English Department.

Geology
(Plant Science) (1918-)
As with Ray B. West, the Plant Science Building never actually served its intended purpose as a barracks. After the war ended in November 1918, construction continued and the building opened for classes in 1920.

              <text>Year of the Arts
From its beginnings, USU has fashioned students into well-rounded citizens by not only offering practical training, but also liberal education in the arts and music. While instruction in woodworking generally concerned the craft of cabinetry and carpentry, early instructor David Hughes undoubtedly exposed students to the art of sculpture. Similarly, the first dramatic presentation at USU took place in 1895 when faculty, students, and local thespians presented The Galley Slave on the converted chapel stage of Old Main’s south wing. This panel highlights buildings significant to the production of art here at USU in conjunction with the ongoing Caine College of the Arts Year of the Arts celebration.

Caine Performance Hall (2006-)
Named for Kathryn Caine Wanlass and Manon Caine Russell, these enduring patrons of the arts also lent their name and generosity to the Caine College of the Arts in 2010. The Performance Hall, meticulously designed by Sasaki Associates, opened in January 2006. It provides unsurpassed acoustics and an intimate atmosphere for concerts and lectures.

Chase Fine Arts Center (FAC) (1967-) The FAC stands as a testament to the university's commitment to the arts, and is the crowning achievement of Daryl Chase's presidency (1954-1968). Chase recognized the importance of the arts, but confessed how faculty had "lived the life of academic scavengers--making use of outmoded and rejected structures... With the new Center," Chase acknowledged, "Utah State University answers a pressing need to remove physical handicaps that have fettered the Arts in their mission to strengthen the mind and spirit…” The university complemented the FAC with a Visual Arts Wing in 1981.

Caine Lyric Theatre (1913-)
Built shortly after the 1912 Thatcher Opera House fire, the university acquired the Lyric in 1967, promising the Thatcher Family to restore the venue to its past prominence. It has since become a landmark in Logan's downtown, serving a half-million patrons, during more than 200 productions. The Caine Lyric Theatre also hosts the student-led Lyric Repertory Company.

Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) (1982-)
Named for benefactor Nora Eccles Harrison, NEHMA specializes in collecting, preserving, and displaying 20th and 21st century American art with a special emphasis on the art of the American West. Following a two-year, $5 million renovation, NEHMA will reopen in spring 2018 .</text>

              <text>The Old AC

As Utah's land-grant institution, USU initially promoted vocation skills paired with a liberal education. These skills included agriculture, mechanical, and domestic arts. The built environment reflected this mission through the physical presence of agriculture on campus. However, by 1954, an expanding curriculum and student body required relocating the remaining agricultural facilities elsewhere.

Model Barn (1891-1919)
Supplied with the best equipment available, the model barn served as an agricultural laboratory, where students received hans-on instruction in animal husbandry. Its close proximity to Old Main provoked the student newspaper to complain of the "delightful odors." In 1919, local tradesmen paid the college $100 to salvage the structure.

President's House (1891-)
The college originally built the structure to house the Domestic Science Department in 1891. However, President Jeremiah W. Sanborn decided to make it his family residence. USU's first 13 presidents, with the exception of J. H. Paul, lived and raised families in the shadow of Old Main. Following President Stanford Cazier's relocation in 1983, the university converted the President's House to an alumni center named in honor of David B. Haight in 1990.

Mechanic Arts Building (1897-1984)
Built in 1897, the Mechanic Arts Building housed woodworking, blacksmithing, and mechanics shops. In 1904, a fire destroyed the building, along with many of the college's early records. Emergency funding enabled the rebuilding and modernization of the structure. As education focuses shifted, a variety of programs, including Landscape Architecture and Communicative Disorders, called the Mechanic Arts Building home. Condemned following the 1962 earthquake, the structure nonetheless received continued use until its demolition in 1984.

E.G. Peterson Agricultural Science Building (1957-2012) Although the on-campus barns relocated in the 1950s, the campus retained its agricultural heritage through the E.G. Peterson Agricultural Science Building. The building opened for classes in 1957 and housed the College of Agriculture along with the Experiment Station and Extension Services until its demolition in 2012. The construction site of the new Life Sciences Building occupies the location of the former Agricultural Science Building.

Art Barn (1919-2015)
The peculiar white barn formerly occupying the USU Credit Union and Welcome Center site was the last agricultural facility located on campus. Constructed in 1919 to replace the model barn, the facility served agricultural purposes until 1959, when the Art Department converted it to a ceramics studio. The Art Barn continued as a classroom and office space until its demolition in 2015.

<text>The disastrous fire of December 19, 1983, required the extensive renovation of Old Main. The fire began in the attic of the north wing, and thanks to the quick action of local firefighters, did not spread to the rest of the building. Water damage, however, decimated the northern section. Renovation plans called for gutting the fire-damaged portions, and remodeling Old Main’s entire interior. In order to maximize space, the university decided to restore Old Main’s historic exterior, but modernize the interior to increase the number of classrooms and offices. Like a “phoenix from the ashes,” Old Main rose to continue as USU’s flagship building.

Animal Science has taken place within the walls
of Old Main. At the insistence of President J.W.
Sanborn, students also participated in
mandatory, non-denominational chapel
exercises. The president kept attendance, even
issuing several demerits to his son Harry for
shirking the obligation.

Old Main also featured other non-classroom
facilities, such as a museum and a gymnasium
on the third floor. In fact, the utility of Old Main
made it subject to frequent remodeling in order
to accommodate an expanding faculty, staff,
and student body.

In addition to skipping chapel services, the Demerit
Book also noted other student infractions.

served the needs of women students who could opt for physical culture
classes rather than military drill, which was mandatory until the 1950s.

The Lighted "A" on the Hill
A beneficiary of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act passed by Congress and signed by President Lincoln in 1862, the Utah Territorial Legislature created the Utah Agricultural College in 1888. Two years later, the south wing of Old Main opened for classes in September. Built in three stages, and designed by three different architects, Old Main has anchored the university for nearly 130 year.s.

Flush with cash after the Territorial Legislature nearly doubled the college's budget request in 1892, the Board of Trustees scrapped the original plans to complete Old Main drawn by C. L. Thompson, and adopted Karl C. Schaub's design for an enlarged central section to adjoin the south and north wings. After completing the north wing and the connecting center structure, a financial panic ensued in 1893, forcing the college to operate on a shoestring budget for the next seven years. In 1901, the economy finally improved, allowing completing of Old Main. H. H. Mahler, the third and final architect to work on Old Main, designed the now familiar tower adorned with its famous blue "A."

the Agricultural College of Utah (referred to
as the UAC), planting roots on the wind-swept,
sagebrush-covered eastern bench above Logan in
1888. In 1929, the state legislature renamed the UAC as
the Utah State Agricultural College (USAC), and in 1957
the institution became Utah State University. As the name
changes suggest, USU has grown for more than 130 years,
sprouting new buildings and grounds to accommodate the
changing educational and recreational needs of its faculty
and student body. Using a variety of materials housed in
Utah State University Libraries’ Special Collections and
Archives, Built Environment reconstructs the stories
behind some of the iconic, overlooked, and even
forgotten structures of the historic USU campus.</text>

              <text>The Weeping Woman

The most well known headstone in the Logan City Cemetery carries the title “Weeping Woman” or “Weeping Lady.” Countless urban legends and folktales surround this monument to Emelia Cronquist. Some of these stories tell of a mother weeping for her deceased children, but there are many versions as to why and when she cries. Some say she cries on Halloween, others that she only cries on a full moon or on the 13th of each month. A small sample of these urban legends can be read here. More can be viewed in Special Collections under the call number SCAFOLK008aGr07Bx9a. If you have an urban legend about the “Weeping Woman,” feel free to write it down and submit your version to Special Collections.

              <text>Gravestones

A headstone, tombstone, or gravestone is typically placed over the head of the deceased’s grave and inscribed with their name, birth date, and date of death. Many headstones also contain symbols or sayings that allow mourners and visitors to garner more information about the deceased. Each symbol can take on many meanings. The interpretation is in the eye of the beholder as well as in the skilled hands of the engraver.

Mormon Temple
is a fairly recent symbol to headstones. Due to the intricacy of the image it was rarely used until the 1960s when sandblasting and air-powered chisels made it easier to replicate. Today the temple symbol is common in cemeteries throughout Utah. The symbol of the LDS temple is used to mark the graves of faithful members of the church and to reinforce the idea of eternal life and eternal families.

Draped Cloth
can symbolism the veil that seperates life and death. In this case where the drapery is over a book the symbol refers to a life cut short before their book of life was completed.

Wreath of Laurel
as seen on the Weeping Woman statue. The laurel wreath is a common symbol usually associated with eternity of the human soul and life everlasting. This symbol can also mean victory of life over death, immortality, or the deceased reaching heaven.

The Squires Headstone
is an example of many symbols. Note the archway at the top of the headstone. The keystone is missing sometimes, symbolizing a life cut short or unfinished. Lilies partially surround the name. The symbol of lilies is usually associated with purity or beauty. The pathway of cobbles leads to the pearly gates which are opened for the deceased to enter.

Clasping Hands
can have many meanings but the most common interpretations are remembrance of the affection between two people, commonly husband and wife, or mother and child. Guidance by a deceased partner who is leading the newly dead into everlasting life may also be symbolized with clasping hands. Yet another interpretation is the hand of God welcoming the newly deceased into heaven and eternal everlasting life.

Lamb
often refers to the lamb of God, gentleness and purity. This symbol may also mean the innocence and purity of a child.

Open Book
can have many meanings. The book can be a religious tome such as the Bible, Koran, or Book of Mormon. The type of open book pictured here usually implies the deceased’s beliefs or vocation. An open book can also signify the “Book of Life” and believing that the deceased will have their name contained therein, thus ensuring them everlasting life in heaven. Another interpretation of an open book is the deceased’s eagerness to learn new or interesting things in life. The book may also signify the deceased’s pure life and be a record of accomplishment.</text>

Logan Cemetery
Before the 19th century, most burials took place on church yards or family-owned lands. Eventually cities saw the need to regulate the burial of human remains more closely. Public cemeteries became areas, usually on the periphery of cities, where families could purchase space for their loved one’s body to “rest.” Cache Valley contains many public cemeteries. Established in 1860, the current Logan City Cemetery resides at 1000 North 1200 East. The rst person interred here was Kate Blair. The original Logan City cemetery, located at 700 East 500 North, was relocated to accommodate the city’s growth. The exact date of the closure is lost to time. During the closure, family members could choose to have their loved one’s remains moved to the new cemetery, or to another location. The bodies of 42 unknown pioneers went unclaimed. Their remains were moved to the new Logan City Cemetery where they are interred in what is known as the “Pioneer Plot.”</text>

Der Antichrist und die fünfzehn Zeichen vor dem Jüngsten Gericht (translated from German as "The Antichrist and the fifteen signs before the last judgement) is a German legend drawn from the apocryphal Apocalypse of Thomas in which the Antichrist brings about the end of the world. This block book version dates from the 1460s and features images of the Antichrist (represented as a figure shadowed by a demon) raising the King of Lybia’s (sic) parents and feigning death. In this block book, coffins represent death and the deceased, and invoke visions of the dead rising from their tombs at the end of times.

As the macabre and gruesome depictions of death and dying suggest, the event of death itself is one many wish to avoid or circumvent. This desire often manifests in spiritual or religious responses, but sometimes it enters the realm of the paranormal or supernatural. Witchcraft and black magic offered the possibility of bypassing death, sometimes in the form of the dead rising from their graves, but also through communication with lost loved ones. These representations and beliefs provide an important cultural understanding of death and mourning.

Thy Son Liveth
Paranormal responses to death prove especially true in times of war. This 1918 book by children’s author Grace Dufe Boylan (first published anonymously) tells the story of Boylan’s son returning from death to communicate via Morse code and automatic writing. Boylan’s son died on a battleeld in France during World War I.
