Cache Valley, Utah is the home of Burmese Muslim, Karen, and Eritrean refugees. Documenting and preserving their stories is an important goal of Utah State University’s Fife Folklore Archives (FFA). Jack London at Utah State University
Description
An account of the resource
Jack London, legendary author of adventure classics such as Call of the Wild and White Fang, came from blue-collar beginnings and was largely self-taught. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, “mammy” Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky. Other items in the digital collection include photographs and book covers. Merrill-Cazier Library's Special Collections and Archives houses one of the largest Jack London manuscript collections in the world, second only to the prestigious Huntington Library in San Marino, California. This acquisition was a result of the close personal and professional relationship between Irving Shepard, Jack London's nephew and executor of his literary estate, and King Hendricks, a prominent London scholar and English professor at USU. Thanks to a series of purchases and donations from the London estate made between 1964 and 1971, USU is now proud to provide online access to selected material from the collection.

Description
An account of the resource
Jack London, legendary author of adventure classics such as Call of the Wild and White Fang, came from blue-collar beginnings and was largely self-taught. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, “mammy” Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky. Merrill-Cazier Library's Special Collections and Archives houses one of the largest Jack London manuscript collections in the world, second only to the prestigious Huntington Library in San Marino, California. This acquisition was a result of the close personal and professional relationship between Irving Shepard, Jack London's nephew and executor of his literary estate, and King Hendricks, a prominent London scholar and English professor at USU. Thanks to a series of purchases and donations from the London estate made between 1964 and 1971, USU is now proud to provide online access to selected material from the collection.

Description
An account of the resource
Jack London, legendary author of adventure classics such as Call of the Wild and White Fang, came from blue-collar beginnings and was largely self-taught. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, “mammy” Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky. Merrill-Cazier Library's Special Collections and Archives houses one of the largest Jack London manuscript collections in the world, second only to the prestigious Huntington Library in San Marino, California. This acquisition was a result of the close personal and professional relationship between Irving Shepard, Jack London's nephew and executor of his literary estate, and King Hendricks, a prominent London scholar and English professor at USU. Thanks to a series of purchases and donations from the London estate made between 1964 and 1971, USU is now proud to provide online access to selected material from the collection.

Morning troubles and climax of exasperation reached in the vulgar rich woman of the silk netter purse and the enquiry for the "classics --- Whistling Jimmy." Girl, plump/ of blue silk waist, arrives in dept. as tyre. The scene of the coll morning removal of the book counter covers. Man resists the second sudden temptation --- to steal more and the third, to flee from the intensely human relation with the blue silk waist lady. Thorn mit be made an Elbert Hubbard & masher & Mike & Badger & J.T. Cooper & Kobble a ??? of the arts.

Statement of William P. Ellis During the winter of 1859, everybody lived in the fort which extended up and down what is now Center Street from Main Street to Third West. Those who wintered here that winter were: Joel Ricks, whose cabin was where Thatcher Bank now stands; Barney Stanford; D.S. Davis; Reuben Gates, who lived with Davis; Abe Caldwell; John E. Jones; Benjamin Williams; James Ellis; Tabitha Ricks and her brother Josiah Hendricks; John Leishman; I.J. Clark; John B. Thatcher; William B. Preston; Ralph Smith; Lemuel Mallory; George Watson; Edward, George, and Thomas Smith and their mother; William Partington; Charles Cowley; James Myler; William Steel; George L. Farrell; James Denning; Big Morgan Evans in Enoch Lewis' house; Thomas McNiel; John Nelson; Thomas X. Smith. (All on the south side of the street) On the north side were: Thomas Rowland; Henry Ballard; Morgan S. Evans; then the school house; Ebenezer Landers; John Wright; George Peacock; John Blanchard; Jesse Pierson; Griffith Charles; David Reese; Lish and Nephi Rodgers; Joseph Aldridge; and David Dilley. Sidney Bibble and Thomas Weir had cabins on the east side of Main Street. This statement was made to Joel Ricks at the time he wrote up the published statement about 1927. Description
An account of the resource
Jack London, legendary author of adventure classics such as Call of the Wild and White Fang, came from blue-collar beginnings and was largely self-taught. He based many of his exciting literary yarns on his hard-scrabble life experiences which included poaching oysters, laboring at a cannery, jute mill, and coal power plant, and panning for gold in the Alaskan Klondike. Broken by personal despair, two unsuccessful attempts to have children with second wife Charmian, the destruction of his California dream home, and slow kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse, London died on November 22, 1916, at age forty. This selective small digital collection highlights his will, letters, and book inscriptions that offer insights into his complex relationships with the important women in his life: first wife Bessie, second wife Charmian, daughters Joan and Bess, mother Flora, “mammy” Jennie, and friend/collaborator Anna Strunsky. Other items in the digital collection include photographs and book covers. Merrill-Cazier Library's Special Collections and Archives houses one of the largest Jack London manuscript collections in the world, second only to the prestigious Huntington Library in San Marino, California. This acquisition was a result of the close personal and professional relationship between Irving Shepard, Jack London's nephew and executor of his literary estate, and King Hendricks, a prominent London scholar and English professor at USU. Thanks to a series of purchases and donations from the London estate made between 1964 and 1971, USU is now proud to provide online access to selected material from the collection.
