Statement of William P. Ellis, made to Joel Ricks, around 1927.
Statement of William P. Ellis During the winter of 1859, everybody lived in the fort which extended up and down what is now Center Street from Main Street to Third West. Those who wintered here that winter were: Joel Ricks, whose cabin was where Thatcher Bank now stands; Barney Stanford; D.S. Davis; Reuben Gates, who lived with Davis; Abe Caldwell; John E. Jones; Benjamin Williams; James Ellis; Tabitha Ricks and her brother Josiah Hendricks; John Leishman; I.J. Clark; John B. Thatcher; William B. Preston; Ralph Smith; Lemuel Mallory; George Watson; Edward, George, and Thomas Smith and their mother; William Partington; Charles Cowley; James Myler; William Steel; George L. Farrell; James Denning; Big Morgan Evans in Enoch Lewis' house; Thomas McNiel; John Nelson; Thomas X. Smith. (All on the south side of the street) On the north side were: Thomas Rowland; Henry Ballard; Morgan S. Evans; then the school house; Ebenezer Landers; John Wright; George Peacock; John Blanchard; Jesse Pierson; Griffith Charles; David Reese; Lish and Nephi Rodgers; Joseph Aldridge; and David Dilley. Sidney Bibble and Thomas Weir had cabins on the east side of Main Street. This statement was made to Joel Ricks at the time he wrote up the published statement about 1927.
