As I write this during the expanding coronavirus epidemic, my grandchildren are preparing for all their middle school and high school classes to move to remote learning.

I'm encouraging them with a description of a remote learning experience from my past.  In 1963-64 I was living in London, and missing my own university classes. I enrolled in a correspondence course taught by Dr. Hendricks, which explored English novels from the 17-18 century.  It was wonderful! I read my assigned novels, wrote my critiques, mailed them off, and waited with impatience for his perceptive and encouraging feedback.

I now teach at the university level myself, and Dr. Hendrick's example as a teacher continues to inspire me.  We never met, but I felt a strong connection to this inspiring man.
