INTERMOUNTAIN RUN
Subject
Description
In February, 1983 students at Intermountain Inter-Tribal School in Brigham City, Utah ran to the Federal Building in Ogden, Utah to deliver petitions, the students had gathered, to Utah's congressional delegation. The petitions favored the continued operation of the boarding school for American Indians, which had been marked for closure by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The school had been in operation since the early 1950's and served students from over 100 different Tribes. Many of the students lived in remote areas not served by Public or Tribal schools. Despite the efforts of the students and many others, the school closed in 1984. This video was produced by media students at Intermountain. The BIA ended up closing a number of boarding schools from 1983-86 and contracted many school operations to the Tribes and local Public Schools. The unique population served by Intermountain School was never ever really addressed. Some students were able to be placed in other schools but many slipped through the cracks.
