Thomas Cogan and The Haven of Health

Summary

“Graphic”

Found in the Utah State University Special Collections library, Thomas Cogan's The Haven of Health was one of the premier health books of sixteenth century England. Originally published in 1584, this particular version was printed in 1588, containing all of the same information as the original publication.

At nearly 450 years old, this book offers great insight into typical Renaissance medicine, especially in England. Some practices are still in use today, and some are laughably out of date or not applicable anywhere but Renaissance England. Either way, it makes for an excellent study in history.

Due to time and research constraints, we were unable to examine everything about Cogan's health guide. We nonetheless came upon some great discoveries, and hope to help the reader better understand the importance of this Renaissance health guide.
