Title

Bulletin from the United States Brewers' Association, 1917

Description

This bulletin from the United States Brewers' Association, the largest amalgamation of brewers interests at the time, announces several bills regarding prohibition circulating in the United States House of Representatives. Two of the bills prohibited all forms of advertisement for intoxicating beverages from being delivered by the United States Post Office. In addition to the text of the bills, the bulletin contains excerpts of several organizations' reactions to the proposed legislation. Most dissenters argued it set a precedent for the limitation of freedom of the press. This bulletin provides a sample of the types of arguments and language used by the anti-prohibitionists leading up to the passage of the Volstead Act in 1919. Gus Becker was an active member in the United States Brewers' Association, serving as a board member for many years. He eventually became the organization's president from 1939 to 1947.
